Senior Physicist and Department head in charge of development,
mechanical engineering and production of Michaelson
Interferometer-Spectrometer. Responsibilities included department
management, optical design, and customer instruction. Designed special
mechanical-optical designs that could be used to produce
high-resolution, infrared Fourier transform spectra.
[Note: Michaelson scanning
Interferometers require use of the Fourier transform to produce a
useful spectrum. The Cooley-Tukey Fast-Fourier-Transform programs were
written for Block Engineering (under contract to DOD) during this
period at Bell Labs (N.J.).]
Assisted basic research and prototyping at Block
Associates (the research adjunct of Block Engineering) on
ultra-miniature microphones, miniature mechanical videocameras, and
microscopic motion sensors for a U.S. intelligence agency.
